Downtempo

Downtempo is the electronic music of contemplation: lower BPMs (typically 70-110), atmospheric textures, and an emotional register that deliberately steps back from dancefloor urgency. The genre's defining records came from the Bristol trip-hop scene of the early 1990s — Massive Attack's "Blue Lines", Portishead's "Dummy", Tricky's "Maxinquaye" — though it equally draws from German ambient producers, American chill-out rooms, and the afterhours playlists of venues like Tresor. Downtempo tracks use sampled breaks, jazz chords, vocal fragments, and synthesised atmospheres to create music that rewards listening rather than dancing. Artists like DJ Shadow, RJD2, and Bonobo defined its sampling-based variant; Air and Moby its more melodic face; Nils Frahm and Jon Hopkins its contemporary acoustic-electronic hybrid.
