Breaks descended directly from hip-hop's original creative act: isolating the percussive break section of a funk or soul record and looping it to create extended rhythmic space. Where drum and bass pushed those breaks past 170 BPM, breaks settled into a mid-tempo range (120-140 BPM) and built a distinct genre out of funky, syncopated rhythms alongside house music's harmony and techno's electronic texture. The Skint label in the UK — home of Fatboy Slim and Lo-Fidelity Allstars — defined one commercial face; Adam Freeland, Rennie Pilgrim, and the Chemical Brothers defined a darker, more underground one. Contemporary breaks has revived through a new generation connecting its rhythmic vocabulary to current club culture. Mixprism tracks breaks across DJ sets from two decades of electronic music, from the peak-era Skint compilations to modern festival bookings that place breaks producers alongside tech house and techno acts.
